5 While the key ideas presented in the article concerning the removal of regulations are reasonable, the suggested ban on the transaction of non-native animals is actually desirable when the issue is examined from a different angle. First, the law will prohibit the sale of non-native animals, but will not confiscate them from those who keep them as domestic pets. For instance, a person who has tropical fish does not have to worry about his fish being taken away, but the owner of the fish is restricted from purchasing non-native tropical fish in the future. Second, the damage and loss inflicted by non-native species is significant. For instance, the Burmese Python, a foreign snake in Florida which also goes by the name anaconda, is a gigantic creature that has been known to devour many animals and even people. Therefore, the damage to native animals and humans is a more pressing issue than the cost of the experiment. Third, non-native species pose a great threat to native species. For example, Belgian hares carry the Myxoma virus. They kill almost 99% of the native rabbits they come in contact with. The threat posed by these non-native animals is real.
