USING DIFFERENTIAL PRIVACY TO ENSURE BUSINESS DATA CONFIDENTIALITY (Christine M O'Keefe) Introduction This project is concerned with the challenge of allowing statistical analysis of business data while maintaining confidentiality. Business survey data can be highly commercially sensitive, and businesses have a keen interest in the confidentiality of their data. Custodian agencies therefore have a responsibility to protect business data, however its particular characteristics mean that it is more challenging to protect than individual or household data. In particular, business data generally have few, continuous variables and the largest enterprises in a sector are often outliers on each of the variables. The most widely-used approach to protecting confidentiality is statistical disclosure control, which involves modifying or confidentialising data before releasing it to users. Newer approaches include the use of a remote analysis system enabling users to submit statistical queries and receive output without direct access to data, as well as the release of agency- generated synthetic data in place of the original data. In addition, there are several proposed approaches which achieve differential privacy. Prior work CM O'Keefe and N Shlomo [J Priv Confid, to appear] have conducted a comparison of the statistical disclosure control and remote analysis approaches on a sample business data set. The comparison includes outputs of exploratory data analysis and linear regression. J.H. Lee, I.Y. Kim and C.M. O’Keefe, [Proc PADM 2011] extended this comparison to include synthetic datasets constructed from regression trees. Proposed project It is the purpose of this proposed project to: Review differentially private approaches to exploratory data analysis and linear regression, Apply these approaches to the same exploratory data analysis and linear regression analyses as were conducted in the prior work on the sugar farms data Compare the output under the differential privacy approach with the outputs under the statistical disclosure control, remote analysis and synthetic data approaches. The project should lead to a publishable manuscript.
