DS4000 controllers store configuration metadata in a private 512 MB region on every configured physical drive called the DACstore. The DACstore area contains drive state and status information, logical drive state and status information and controller and subsystem information. The DACstore on each physical drive is designed to store that drive’s state and status, the worldwide name of its array, the logical drives it contains and the definitions for those logical drives. Additionally, one physical drive in each array (with a minimum of three in each storage system) stores the controller- and subsystem-level information. Storing metadata in the nonvolatile DACstore is designed to provide high availability and enable easy reconfigurations and migrations. As system configuration data resides on every configured physical drive, it is designed to allow controllers and/or multiple drives to be removed or swapped without losing the system configuration. Drives can be relocated within the storage system to help improve channel utilization/protection or even migrated as a complete array into another storage system. And in both instances, it is designed to allow all configuration metadata and user data remains intact on the drives.
