Grayson (PhD 1973, U of Oregon Research Interests: Quaternary paleoecology, zooarchaeology, historic biogeography, evolutionary ecology, North American prehistory (especially the Arid West), European Paleolithic. "My prime interests lie in understanding the interrelationships between people and the biotic landscapes with which they interact. My technical specialization in zooarchaeology provides me with one means of addressing this general area, while theory drawn from both biogeography and evolutionary ecology provides the conceptual tools I have used to understand those interrelationships. Although my research is driven more by questions than by time periods or geography, the bulk of my work has involved the latest Pleistocene and Holocene of the Great Basin (western United States) and Pleistocene southwestern France, areas in which I plan to continue working in the future."

19 Archaeology as Studies of Past Human Culture 고고학의 근본 목적은 다른 인문학과 마찬가지로 인간에 대한 이해. 다만, 물적인 자료를 다루기 때 문에 문헌사나, 인류학과는 다른 절차와 방법을 사용함. 고고학은 절차상 과학을 추구하지만, 그 근본 목 적인 인간에 대한 탐구라는 측면에서는 인문학 (Renfrew 3 판 :12) 어쨌든, 고고학은 과거 ‘ 문화 ’ 의 유산을 다룬다는 점은 공감. 그렇다면 문화란 ?
