6 The Korean Alphabet ( 한글 (hangul)) consonants vowels

7 Background….  한글 used to be written with adapted Chinese characters called hanja ( 한자 ), which also had various phonetic systems  However, for the average peasant/farmer, hanja was very hard to learn, and it remained a language of the aristocrats until the 15 th century  In the 15 th century, the king, Sejong the Great, commissioned a new national writing system in order to help the illiterate citizens  In that time, the language was called hun/min/jung/um, or, literally in hanja, “teach, citizens, correct, sound”  However, the aristocrats did not like this new language because they thought it was a waste of time to learn and that it would not help Korea’s relations with China  So it came into widespread use only around the 20 th century  Traditionally, Korean was written in columns, from top to bottom, right to left, but is now written like English!
