When we look at the the world of backup, there are an over whelming number of challenges that I am sure each and every one of you is facing today – whether it’s a combination or just one of the factors we see here today. Reducing costs and complexity - In almost every vector of data protection modernization that was surveyed by ESG, reducing costs (both capital and operational) was the number one decision factor, both for purchasing and against purchasing. Customers are looking to reduce their overall costs. Many organizations have deployed a separate solution for their vm backup to that of their physical server backup. This has increased backup complexity (two solutions to manage), storage consumption and storage costs (duplicate data on physical and virtual that’s being backed up separately). Customers are looking for a solution that is easy to manage – both the backup and recovery process. 2) Improving the backup and recovery of virtual server environments - Protect and recover not only VMs but also the granular data within them. Customers want the flexibility to restore VMs or data to any location, device or host. 3a) Meeting backup windows and recovery time SLAs – IT professionals are struggling to meet their aggressive backup windows and recovery time objectives. 3b) System and data recoverability - Recovering from power outages or system/application failures in order to keep their IT infrastructure up and running with minimal downtime. In addition, being able to restore data in the event of data loss. All types of outages or events that result in downtime and/or data loss, cause disruption and in some cases, financial and reputational losses. Therefore, it’s no surprise that IT professionals are demanding faster restore and recovery support to meet their aggressive recovery times. 4) Keeping pace with capacity of data to protect – Organizations of all sizes are looking for ways to keep pace with the near doubling of storage growth annually. Particularly in virtualized environments, storage is being consumed at high rates due to VM sprawl. Newly created virtual machines cause massive amounts of duplicate data, applications, and operating systems. The increase in volume of data to protect also increases storage consumption, network traffic, I/O, and the time to backup. 5) Improving the reliability of backup and recovery – On average, out of every 100 backup jobs only 80 of them are successful.
