Korea University is one of the leading universities in Korea with an acknowledged reputation for excellence in research and teaching and for links with business and industry. Established in 1991, the Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) at Korea University is a leading academic institution in educating and nurturing young experts specialized in international affairs. GSIS has contributed to producing specialists in International Commerce, International Development & Cooperation, International Peace & Security, Area Studies, and Korean Studies. In 1996, Korea University GSIS was one of the top five graduate schools of international studies in Korea and were awarded a five-year national grant program initiated by the Ministry of Education. Since 2000, GSIS has been committed to conducting a cutting-edge research and teaching various international affairs and has attracted the highest quality of students and faculty members. The primary goal of GSIS is to educate and train specialists in international affairs equipped with a comprehensive understanding of important theoretical tools and current economic, political, social, developmental, and environmental issues. GSIS welcomes candidates of high caliber from all parts of the world.

Main activities : Korea University Portal to Information Depository. 1) Mail 2) Class information & Course registration 3) Grade inquiries (Transcript of courses completed & course evaluation) 4) Tuition and scholarship status 5) Apply for leave or return from absence 5) Internet certificate verification request - Certificate of enrollment, transcript, scholarship, graduation etc. 2. Make ID and Password from September 1, 2017 1) Visit and click English for your convenience. 2) Student Number will be given to you at an orientation. 3) Password : Social No. yymmdd (your birthday) – (seven digits) - For students who already have a Alien Registration Number, please input the number written on your Alien Registration Card. 4) If you want to use address (your click Yes. Unless, click No. 5) Input “ address” that you use most frequently. 6) Click “Enter” ★ Blackboard ( 1. Active 1~2 days after KUPID registration, can login with KUPID ID/PW. 2. 1. Students must enroll within the designated enrollment period. 2. Students should pay the tuition fee and register classes on the registration period. 3. Payment Option : Tuition payment installment (GSIS homepage-Notice) a. KUPID-Tuition Payment/Scholarship-Payment in Installments Application-Apply b. Apply on designated period ★ Leave of /Return from absence 1. Period : a. Spring Semester: Feb 1 ~ Feb 25 b. Fall Semester: Aug 1 ~ Aug 25 - Observe the designated application period. Student cannot leave of/return from on the middle of semester. *Int’l students who have D-2 visa should maintain their status of enrollment to be considered for int’l scholarship. 2. CAN take off a maximum of 2 consecutive semesters at a time and CANNOT exceed 3 semesters off. 3. When the period of ‘Leave of Absence’ expires; 1) Apply for ‘Return from Absence’ on KUPID website during the application period. 2) MUST pay the tuition fees during the designated enrollment period 4. How to apply : KUPID-Registration-Application for Leave of Absence/Return **Regarding Visa, ask the Seoul immigration office in person.

Create an Alien Registration Card - Contact Seoul immigration office directly *You must apply for a Residence Permit at the Seoul Immigration Office within 90 days of arrival in Korea. 2. Visit GSIS office (#223) 1) Application Period : September 4 (Mon)~ 2) Bring your ARC 3) Office updates your ARC number 3. Visit One-Stop Service Center 1) Submit documents: a. Application form with your photo b. A copy of ARC c. An extra photo 2) Place: B1F, Central plaza (중앙광장) Students need a Korea University Student ID Card to borrow books from the KU library and to access school facilities. (There is NO TEMPORARY student ID card before making a student ID card on the designated period.) 1. Alien Registration Card 2. Visit GSIS Office 3. One-Stop Service Center * Re-issuing Student ID Card a) Fee: \5,000 (re-issue due to malfunction of the card is free of charge) b) Submit a re-issue application at the One-Stop Service Center located at B1 in the Central Plaza. It will be issued within an hour. c) Students may convert the type of ID card once with a fee of \5,000.

Options to issue certificates; 1) Visit One-Stop Service Center located in B1F, Central Plaza (중앙광장) 2) Vending Machine located on the first floor of Int’l Hall (국제관) - Available with portal ID 3) Online Order - → Information Depot → Internet Certificate Verification System → Certificate Request → pay by credit card *If you have any difficulty in ordering by online(KUPID), please ask a help to the student assistant at GSIS Computer Lab (Room #427, ). **If you have any difficulty in issuing certificates when you are qualified for issue, please visit to the GSIS office for further assistance.

1. 반드시 공지된 기간 내에 등록금 완불 및 수강 신청 완료되어야 함. 2. 분할납부 (GSIS 홈페이지 – Notice 및 KUPID 공지사항에서 확인) a. 지정된 신청기간에 신청 후 납부 b. 신청방법: KUPID로그인 → 등록/장학 → 등록금 → 분할납부 신청 ★ 휴학/복학 신청 1. 신청기간: a. 봄 학기: 2월 1일 ~ 2월 25일 b. 가을 학기: 8월 1일 ~ 8월 25일 ** 학기 중 휴학신청 불가 2. 휴학은 1년 또는 한 학기 단위로 할 수 있으며, 통산 3학기까지 가능 단, 최대 2학기까지 연속 휴학 신청 가능 3. 신청한 휴학기간이 끝났을 때, KUPID 복학신청 후, 등록기간에 등록금 납부 4. 등록방법: KUPID → 학적/졸업 → 휴복학신청(대학원)

*학생 본인이 직접 중앙광장 지하1층 One-stop 서비스센터에 방문하여 신청하여야 하며, 대리신청은 절대 불가함 (증명사진 1매 지참). 2. 신청장소: 중앙광장 One-stop 센터 ( , 1144) 3 제출서류 ① 학생증 신청서(순수, 금융 선택) 1부 (중앙광장 One-stop 센터 배치) ② 증명사진 1매 ③ 신분증(앞, 뒤면) 또는 여권 사본 1매 4. 학생증 신청 구분 - 학생증은 금융탑재와 순수(비금융)로 구분 선택하여 신청함: a. 학생증 신청 구분: 예(금융기능탑재) / 아니오(비금융(순수))로 선택 b. 통장계좌: 하나은행 계좌가 없으면 등록하지 않아도 됨 c. 금융탑재 학생증 신청자는 학생증 발급 후 ‘하나은행(고대점), (하나스퀘어점)’에 방 문하여 등록해야 함.

1. Sugang System : a. Fall Course Registration Period: August 24 – 29, 2017 b. Fall Course Add/Drop Period: September 6 – 8, 2017 * CANNOT change or drop courses after course add/drop period 2. Maximum credits per semester are 15 credits 3. Class cancellation : If fewer than three students register for a course 4. No system of re-taking courses in Graduate School ★ Grades 1. Course evaluation : KUPID ( - Registration&Graduation-Grade Inquires-Course evaluation *Grade check is possible 24hours after completing course evaluation. 2. Grade check : 3. Credits Ph.D. in International Studies (36 credits) ★ 9 credits in the required courses - Independent Study I (2nd semester) - Independent Study II (3rd semester) - Thesis Research II (4th semester) ★ 3 credits: ADVANCED RESEARCH METHODS (IAC801 or802): ★ 6 credits in your track(master courses) ★ 12 credits in “Advanced Seminars in ~” (IACxxx) ★ 6 credits in any major at GSIS *Some courses can fall under more than one major track. If so, those courses’ credits can be accepted as major electives for all the associated tracks. You can find the course detail information on Ⅴ. Course list.

Must be completed in your 3rd semester or above b. At least 27 credits completed by end of 3rd semester c. An average GPA of at least 3.0 or higher. 2) General Examination (Total 3 chances) - Get at least 80 out of 100 in order to pass for each exam 3) Language Test : Doctoral students have to pass following language tests. a. English test b. 2nd foreign language test 4) Exemption conditions from Language test a. Exemption conditions from English Test ① TOEFL score iBT 92 or above ② If you completed MA degree which all courses are conducted in English or GSIS in Korea are exempt from English test. Exemption conditions from 2nd foreign language test ① Nationalized certified test score *KUGSIS obeys the regulation of KU general graduate school ② Take KU IFLS (Institute of Foreign Language Studies) courses for Graduate School 2nd foreign language credit and earn a grade over B. * Application Period will be noticed at GSIS homepage or KUIFLS * Detail Info: ③ If you get a BA or MA degree abroad, the language of the country that you earn your degree from will be accepted as your 2nd foreign language. *As for Int’l Students, their native language cannot meet the 2nd foreign language requirement, but they can choose ‘Korean’ or other languages as 2nd foreign language. ④ Take KU 2nd foreign language examination held by KU Graduate School. *When a specific schedule will be noticed, GSIS office will receive application forms from applicants at once. Ⅶ. 대학원학칙 국제대학원 시행세칙 개정 후 전문 일부 개정 제 1 조 (목적) 이 세칙은 본교 대학원학칙(이하 "학칙"이라 함)과 대학원 학사운영규정이 국제대학원 (이하 "대학원"이라 함)에 위임한 사항과 그 시행에 필요한 세부사항을 규정함을 목적으로 한 다. <개정 > 제 2 조 (교육목표) 본 대학원은 국제관계 및 세계 각 지역에 관한 이론 및 실무를 심도 있게 연구하고 교수하여 한국의 국제화를 능동적으로 주도할 역량 있는 국제전문가 및 지도급 인재를 육성 함 으로써 국가와 사회발전에 기여하고, 아울러 한국에 관심 있는 외국인들에게는 한국에 관한 체계적인 연구기회를 제공함으로써 세계 속의 한국의 위상을 더욱 높이는 것을 교육목표로 한 다. 제 3 조 (교육과정) 석·박사과정 학생이 이수하여야 할 교과목 및 학점은 내규로 정한다. <조 신설 > 제 4 조 (수업연한 및 재학연한) ① 석사학위과정과 박사학위과정의 수업연한은 2년으로 한다. 단, 산․학․연 협동과정 및 학․석사연계과정 등 특별프로그램에 의한 석사과정의 경우 총장의 승 인 을 얻어 수업연한을 6개월 단축할 수 있다. ② 석사과정 수업연한 단축에 관한 세부사항은 내규에 따로 정한다. ③ 재학연한은 학위청구논문 제출연한 내에서는 제한을 두지 아니하며, 재학연한을 경과 한 자는 영구수료 처리한다. 제 5 조 (수료를 위한 최소이수학점) ① 학위과정 수료에 필요한 학점은 석사과정 39학점 이상, 박사과 정 36학점 이상으로 한다. ② 제1항의 수료를 위한 총 이수학점의 평점평균은 3.0 이상이어야 한다. <조 신설 > 제 6 조 (학기별 학점취득) 매 학기별 학점취득은 석사과정 15학점, 박사과정 12학점까지 취득할 수 있다. <조 신설 > <개정 > 제 7 조 (휴학기간) ① 휴학은 1년 또는 학기 단위로 할 수 있으며, 통산 휴학기간은 3학기로 한다. ② 군복무, 출산으로 인한 휴학은 제1항의 휴학기간에 포함하지 아니한다. 단, 군복무기간은 의무복부 한정한다. ③ 휴학기간은 학위청구논문제출 연한에 산입한다. 단, 대학원위원회에서 휴학사유가 특 별하다고 인정한 경우에는 산입하지 아니 할 수 있다. ④ 신입생, 재입학생의 경우에도 입학 후 첫 학기부터 휴학을 신청할 수 있다. <조 신설 > 제 8 조 (수업) ① 수업은 주간에 실시하며, 필요에 따라 공휴일 수업과 현장실습을 할 수 있다. ② 계절학기 수업의 개설에 관한 세부 사항은 대학원장이 따로 정한다. 제 9 조 (재입학의 제한) ① 재입학은 전공분야가 제적이전과 동일한 경우에 한한다. ② 제적된 날로부터 3년을 초과하는 경우에는 재입학을 할 수 없다. 제 10조 (전공신청 및 변경) ① 석사학위과정 학생은 입학 후 제3학기차에 학생의 희망, 적성등을 고려하여 세부전공 중 1개의 전공을 정하여야 한다. ② 석사학위과정 4학기차 수강신청시 까지는 전공을 변경할 수 있다. ③ 전공변경을 원하는 자는 개강 후 10일 이내에 다음 각 호의 서류를 제출하여 대학원장의 승 인을 얻어야 한다. 1. 전공변경 신청서 2. 성적일람표

58 제 11조 (수강신청) ① 수강신청은 매 학기 지정된 수강신청 기일 내에 본교 수강신청 관리시스 템에 접속하여 당해 학기에 이수하고자 하는 교과목을 온라인으로 신청하여야 한다. ② 석사학위과정 논문지도세미나 I은 3학기에 수강하여야 한다. <개정 > ③ 학점교환협정이 체결된 타교 대학원 또는 본교 일반대학원 개설 교과목을 수강하고 자 하는 경우에는 개설 담당교수의 허락을 받은 후 본 대학원 학사지원부로 신청하여야 한다. 현지대학 세미나 및 인턴십 학점을 인정받고자 하는 경우에는 본대학원 학사지원부로 신청서를 제출하여 대학원장의 승인을 받은 후 참가하여야 하며 세부사항은 따로 정한다. ④ 박사학위과정 학생은 박사학위과정 개설과목 중에서 최소 12학점 이상을 수강해야 하며, 논 문지도세미나는 4학기에 수강하여야 한다. 제 12조 (수강신청 정정) 이미 수강신청 한 교과목을 변경하고자 하는 경우에는 수강신청 정정기 간에 본 교 수강신청 관리시스템에 접속하여 온라인으로 변경할 수 있다. 제 13조 (학점인정) ① 학점교환협정이 체결된 타교 대학원과 본교 일반대학원에서 취득한 학점은 6학 점까지 이를 인정할 수 있다. ② 학술교류협정에 의한 교환학생 및 복수학위제의 학점은 수료에 필요한 학점의 2분의 1 범위내에서 인정받을 수 있다. ③ 연구과정을 이수한 자가 석사과정에 입학하였을 경우 연구과정에서 이수한 과목 중 동일한 것에 한하여 석사과정 이수학점으로 인정할 수 있다. ④ 입학 전에 취득한 타 대학원 성적을 입학 이후 본 대학원 성적으로 인정받고자 하는 경우 대 학원장의 허가를 받아 석사 12학점, 박사 6학점까지 인정할 수 있으며 세부사항은 별도 로 정한 다. 제 14조 (지도교수) 석사 및 박사학위과정을 이수하는 자는 제3차 학기초에 지도교수를 신청하여 대학원장의 허가를 받아야 하며 연구 및 논문작성에 관하여 지도교수의 지도를 받아야 한다. 제 15조 (지도교수 변경) ① 지도교수의 퇴임, 휴직, 해외여행 및 그 밖의 사유로 1년 이상 연구 및 논문 지도를 받을 수 없는 경우에는 지도교수를 변경하여야 한다. ② 지도교수를 변경하고자 할 때에는 지도교수 변경신청서를 제출하여 대학원장의 승인 을 받아야 한다. 제 16조 (학위청구 자격) 과정별 수료에 필요한 최소이수학점을 충족한 후 다음 각호의 요건을 갖 춘 자는 학위청구논문을 제출할 수 있다. <개정 > 1. 자격시험에 합격한 자 2. 지도교수를 배정을 받아 논문계획서의 승인을 받은 자 제 17조 (학위청구논문 제출의 연한) ① 석사학위청구를 위한 논문 제출은 입학 년도로부터 6년을 초과 할 수 없다. ② 박사학위청구를 위한 논문 제출은 입학 년도로부터 10년을 초과할 수 없다. ③ 다음 각호의 1에 해당자로서 본 대학원 대학원위원회에서 그 사유를 인정받은 기간은 위 ①, ②에 산입하지 아니한다. 1. 병역(의무복무) 2. 출산 3. 장기해외체류 4. 공직연수 ④ 제1항 내지 제3항에도 불구하고 기타 연구지연을 초래한 사유로 수료자가 논문제출기한의 연 장을 신청하는 경우에는 대학원위원회에서 1회에 한하여 2년의 범위 내에서 승인할 수 있다. 제 18조 (학위청구논문 계획서) 석사학위과정 학생은 제4차 학기초에 논문지도세미나 신청 시 학 위청구논문 계획서를 작성하여 지도교수의 승인을 받아 본 대학원 학사지원부로 제출하 여야 한다.

59 제 19조 (학위청구논문 제출 절차 및 시기) ① 학위청구논문을 제출하고자 하는 자는 심사용 논문 은 심사위원장에게 제출하고, 논문심사 신청서류는 논문 심사료와 함께 학사지원부에 제 출하여야 한다. ② 학위청구논문의 제출시기는 전기는 5월 10일, 후기는 11월 10일까지로 한다. 제 20조 (학위청구논문 작성 용어) ① 석사학위논문은 영어로 작성하여야 한다. <개정 > ② 박사학위논문은 영어로 작성하는 것을 원칙으로 한다. 제 21조 (자격시험의 시행) ① 자격시험은 외국어시험과 종합시험으로 나누어 실시한다. ② 석사학위과정 외국어시험은 한국학과 외국인 학생에 한하여 한국어를 시행하며, 박사 과정 외국어시험은 영어를 필수로 하고 다른 1종은 제2외국어중에서 응시자의 선택에 따라 시행한다. ③ 외국어시험은 각 외국어 별 대학원장이 2인 이상의 위원에게 출제를 의뢰하여 시행하 고 100점 만점에 70점이상을 합격점으로 한다. ④ 석사학위과정 종합시험은 구술시험과 필기시험으로 구분하되 특별 프로그램 운영에 있어 원장이 필요하다고 인정하는 경우에 한하여 구술시험을 시행할 수 있다. ⑤ 석사학위과정 종합시험의 필기시험은 2과목의 범위에서 시행하되 국제학과는 공통필 수에서 1과목, 세부전공별 전공선택과목에서 1과목을 시행하고 한국학과는 3분야중 2분 야를 선택하여 각 1과목을 시행한다. ⑥ 박사학위과정 종합시험은 공통영역으로 국제통상분야(국제통상전공자) 또는 국제협 력 분야(국제협력전공자)에 관한 기본 지식을 평가하고, 전공영역으로 국제통상, 국 제협력 또 는 국제개발에서 2과목을 평가하며, 각 분야 또는 과목당 출제위원은 2인 이상으로 한다. <개정 > ⑦ 종합시험은 100점 만점에 80점 이상을 합격으로 한다. 다만, 과목별 합격을 인정한다. 제 22조 (자격시험 응시자격) ① 외국어시험은 제2차 학기부터 응시할 수 있다. ② 석사학위과정 종합시험은 3학기 이상 이수하고 평균평점 3.0이상으로 취득한 자에 한 하여 응시할 수 있다. ③ 박사학위과정 종합시험은 3학기 이상 이수하고 평균성적 3.0이상으로 취득한 자에 한 하여 응시할 수 있다. 제 23조 (자격시험 응시절차 및 시기) ① 자격시험에 응시하고자 하는 자는 응시원서를 지정된 기 일 내에 수험료와 함께 학사지원부에 제출하여야 한다. ② 외국어시험은 매년 3월과 9월에, 종합시험은 매년 4월과 10월에 실시하며, 필요한 경 우에는 추가시험을 실시할 수 있다. 제 24조 (자격시험의 면제) ① 석사과정 종합시험과 한국학과 외국어시험(한국어) 면제대상자는 다음 각호와 같다. 1. 종합시험 가. 3학기까지의 전학년 평균평점이 3.75이상인 자 <개정 > 나. 4학기까지의 전학년 평균평점이 3.75이상인 자 <개정 > 2. 외국어 시험 (한국어) 가. 한국어과목을 3학기 이상 수강하여 매 학기 A학점이상의 성적을 취득한 자 나. 외국어(한국어)담당교원의 어학평가서를 제출하여 대학원장의 승인을 받은 자 ② 박사과정 외국어 시험의 면제대상자는 다음 각호와 같다. 1. 영어성적 TOEFL 237(CBT) 이상 취득자 (시험일 기준으로 2년이내)는 영어시험을 면 제 함.

60 2. 본 대학교 국제어학원에서 개설한 "대학원 외국어시험 인정을 위한 어학강좌" 에서 B 학 점 이상의 성적을 취득한 자는 해당외국어 3. 외국대학에서 학사학위 또는 석사학위를 취득하고 박사학위과정에 입학한 자는 해당 외국어 4. 외국대학원 또는 국내 국제대학원에서 모든 강좌를 영어로 수강하여 석사학위를 취득하 고 박사학위과정에 입학한 자는 영어시험을 면제함. 5. 국제적으로 공인된 영어 이외의 외국어 어학능력시험에서 중급이상을 취득한 자는 해당 외국어 제 25조 (자격시험 재응시) ① 외국어 시험에 불합격한 자는 회수에 관계없이 재응시 할 수 있다. ② 석사학위과정의 종합시험 응시회수는 제한을 두지 아니하며, 박사학위과정 종합시험 은 3회까지로 제한한다. 제 26조 (논문심사위원회) ① 논문심사위원회는 본교 전임교원 및 해당분야의 권위자 중에서 대학 원 장이 위촉한다. ② 논문심사위원의 수는 지도교수를 포함하여 석사학위 3명이상, 박사학위 5명이상으로 구성한다. ③ 논문심사위원장은 지도교수가 맡으며 심사의 진행을 주재하고 심사의 결과를 대학원 장에게 보고한다. 제 27조 (박사과정 연구계획서 심사) ① 박사과정의 경우 논문에 대한 질적 향상을 위하여 연구계 획서를 심사한다. <조신설 > ② 심사의 최종판정은 심사위원 2/3 이상의 찬성으로 결정한다. <조신설 > 제 28조 (논문 심사) ① 논문심사는 논문내용의 타당성과 적격성 심사와 구술시험으로 한다. ② 논문심사의 최종판정은 합격, 불합격으로 하며, 합격은 석사학위는 심사위원 2/3 이상, 박사학위는 심사위원 4/5이상의 찬성으로 결정한다. ③ 불합격된 논문은 지도교수의 지도하에 수정․보완한 후 1년 이내에 이를 다시 제출할 수 있다. 제 29조 (학위수여 심의) 학위수여는 본 대학원 대학원위원회의 심의를 거쳐야 한다. 제 30조 (장학금) ① 석사학위과정 성적우수 장학금 지급은 전 학기에 외국어를 제외한 전공 9학 점 이상 취득자를 대상으로 한다. ③ 장학금 지급은 학생의 전 학기 성적 및 가정환경, 프로그램 기여도 등을 고려하여 본 대 학원 장학위원회에서 매 학기마다 지급기준, 지급금액, 지급인원을 정한다. 제 31조 (공개강좌) ① 본 대학원은 필요에 따라 공개강좌를 개설하고 이수자 에게는 [별지서식 1] 의 이수증서를 교부할 수 있다. ② 공개강좌의 명칭 또는 교과목 개설기간, 장소 및 수강정원 등에 관한 사항은 개설시대 학원장이 이를 정한다. 제 32조 (연구생) ① 본 대학원이 개설하는 특정 교과목 또는 과제에 관하여 수강을 희망하는 자는 대학원장의 허가를 얻어 연구생으로 입학할 수 있다. ② 연구생은 석사학위과정 지원자격과 같으며 본 대학원이 실시하는 전형에 합격한 경우 에 입학을 허가한다. 제 33조 (연구기간 및 연구과제) ① 연구생의 연구기간은 1년으로 한다. ② 연구과정의 교육과정은 교육과정 일람에 의한다. 제 34조 (대학원위원회의 회의) ① 본 대학원 대학원위원회의 회의는 재적위원 과반수 출석으로 개 회하고 출석위원 2/3 이상의 찬성으로 안건을 심의한다. ② 그 밖에 본 대학원 대학원위원회 운영에 관한 사항은 본교 "위원회설치운영규정"을 준 용한다.

61 제 35조 (학․석사연계과정) ① 본교 국제학부를 조기졸업 하는 학생이 국제대학원으로 진학할 경 우3 학기만에 석사학위과정을 이수할 수 있는 학․석사연계과정을 둔다. ② 본교 국제학부 학생이 평점 4.0 이상 및 재학 5학기 이상으로 조기졸업을 예정하는 자 는 본 대학원의 학․석사연계과정에 지원할 수 있다. ③ 본교 국제학부생은 본 대학원 과목을 선 수강으로 6학점까지 취득할 수 있으며, 학․석 사연계과정으로 입학 후 이를 본 대학원 학점으로 인정받을 수 있다. ④ 학․석사연계과정으로 본 대학원에 입학한 학생은 본 대학원장이 정하는 전공교과목 시 험을 통하여 6학점까지 취득할 수 있다. 부 칙 1. (경과조치) ① 제20조 제1항 제1호의 자격시험 면제 기준 변경은 2013년 8월 졸업대상자부터 적용한다. ② 제17조 제6항의 박사과정 자격시험 변경 및 제23조의 박사과정 연구계획서 심사는 2013학년 도 3월 입학자부터 적용한다. 이 시행세칙은 2015년 3월 1일부터 개정 시행한다. 62 Ⅶ. School Regulations for Graduate Schools Detailed Rules for Operation of Graduate School of International Studies ` Article 1 (Purpose) These rules for operation are purposed to specify items entrusted by the KU School Regulation for Graduate Schools and by Graduate School Policy of Department Operation (hereafter referred to as "School Regulations") to Graduate School of International Studies (hereafter referred to as "GSIS") and detail rules necessary for the operation of such items. Article 2 (Objectives of Education) GSIS has the goal to foster capable international experts and competent people who are able to actively lead the internationalization of Korea by instructing theory and practical affairs about international relations and each part of the world so as to contribute to the national development, as well as to heighten Korea’s reputation in the world by offering chance to study Korea to foreigners who are interested in Korea. Article 3 (Curriculum) The requirements of coursework and credit for Master/Doctoral Program will be determined by the internal regulations. <Article established on > Article 4 (Period of Study and Maximum Limit of Pupilage) ① The required period of study for M.A and Ph.D. Degrees is two years. However, those admitted through special programs such as ‘Industry University Institute Collaboration’ or ‘DIS-GSIS Integrated Curriculum System’ can shorten the length of period of study by 6 months under the Korea University Dean’s approval. ② Details for the period of study less than two years will be followed within the internal regulations. ③ There is no limit in the length of pupilage prior to the submission of dissertation, but for those who have maximized on the limit of residence will lead to permanent completion. <Article amended on > Article 5 (Required Minimum Credits for Course Completion) ① The required amount of credits is at least 50 credits for Master Program, and 36 credits for Doctoral Program. ② The average of total grade for course completion should be above 3.0 of GPA. <Article established on > Article 6 (Credit acquisition) The maximum credit in which students can take per semester is 18 credits for Master Program, and 12 credits for Doctoral Program. <Article established on > Article 7 (Period of Leave of Absence) ① Students can take ‘Leave of Absence’ for one or two semesters when applying for ‘leave of absence’; three semesters in total length of ‘leave of absence’ period. ② Students leaving school for mandatory military service or maternity are not counted as ‘leave of absence’ as clause ① indicates. ③ The period of ‘Leave of Absence’ is included in the term of years for thesis submission. It can ONLY be excluded from the term of years for thesis submission under the graduate school committee’s approval. ④ Admitted, re-admitted students can also apply for ‘Leave of Absence’ in the first semester. <Article established on > Article 8 (Classes) Courses are conducted on weekdays; if necessary, there can be classes on holidays as well as field trip. Article 9 (Limitation of Re-admission) ① Readmission is granted only when major is identical to that of before expulsion. ② Those who exceed three years of expulsion cannot apply for readmission.

63 Article 10 (Application for Major and Its Change) ① Students of GSIS in master’s degree program should determine their major among five major tracks in the third semester considering their desire and aptitude. ② Changing major is possible until the course registration period of the fourth semester. ③ Those who want to change the major should submit the following documents within 10 days after opening the course so as to obtain Dean’s approval. 1. Application form for a major change 2. Grade transcript Article 11 (Course Registration) ① Course registration should be conducted online by connecting to the intranet during the specified period. ② For those enrolled in Master’s degree program, Thesis Research I is to be taken during the third semester. <Article amended on > ③ Those who want to register for courses at graduate school or general graduate school of Korea University, which are derived from academic exchange agreements, should submit the course registration form to the Academic Affairs Department after gaining approval of the professor in charge of the course in the certain school. ④ Those who want to acquire credits in the summer program and internship should submit an application form to the Department of Academic Affairs of GSIS and gain Dean’s approval in advance while further details are to be determined. ⑤ Students in Doctorate Degree Program should acquire at least 12 credits from doctoral courses and take the Thesis Research courses. Article 12 (Correction of Course Registration) Students can correct the registered courses online by connecting to the intranet during the correction period. Article 13 (Credit Acknowledgement) ① Credits acquired from graduate school or general graduate school of Korea University, which are derived from academic exchange agreements, can be granted at most 6 credits. ② Credits of exchange program and dual degree students’ deriving from academic exchange agreements can be granted at most half of required credits for course completion. ③ In case that those who completed research course enter the Master’s Degree program, the courses taken during research course can be granted as acquired credit for master’s degree. ④ In case that the student has completed credits at another graduate school, student can transfer credits to this graduate school program, pending approval from the dean. For master’s students, up to 12 credits and for Ph.D. students, up to 6 credits can be accepted. Further details are to be followed. Article 14 (Thesis Advisor) ① Students in M.A and Ph.D. Program should appoint a thesis advisor under the Dean’s approval and be guided in their research and thesis. Article 15 (Changing Thesis Advisor) ① Thesis advisor can be changed in case students cannot be guided by the present thesis advisor for over 1 year for some reasons such as resignation, temporary retirement and international research trips. ② Those who want to change the thesis advisor should submit the required documents and gain the Dean’s approval. Article 16 (Requirement for Degree) Students who have acquired more than the minimum credits for course completion and satisfied the following requirements can submit their thesis/dissertation. <Article established on > 1. Those who have passed the general ‘Qualification’ exam 2. Those who have been approved by thesis advisor for thesis/dissertation proposal.

64 Article 17 (Deadlines for Thesis/Dissertation) ① Candidates of Master’s degree must submit and get approval on their dissertation within six years (from the year of admission to the Master’s program). ② Candidates of Doctor’s degree must submit and get approval on their dissertation within ten years (from the year of admission to the doctorate program). ③ Upon the approval from the graduate school committee, the following causes will allow candidates to extend the length of submission for their dissertation under clause ① and ②. A. Military Service B. Childbirth/maternity care C. Long-term leave of absence overseas D. Service to public office ④ If candidates with completed coursework apply for extension of thesis/dissertation submission due to the delay of research, graduate school committee can approve the candidates of an extended length of 2 years (for once only). Article 18 (Dissertation Proposal) Students in Master’s Degree program should fill out thesis proposal and submit it to the Academic Affairs Department after getting approval from thesis advisor when applying for ‘Thesis Research’ at the beginning of the fourth semester. Article 19 (Procedures and Dates for Submitting Dissertation) ① Students applying for thesis should submit their thesis to the evaluation committee chief (thesis advisor) and thesis application form to the Academic Affairs Department with thesis examination fee. ② The deadline for submitting thesis/dissertation is until April 30th for the Spring Semester and October 31st for Fall Semester. Article 20 (Language of Dissertation) ① Master’s degree dissertations should be written in English or local language which is not one’s mother tongue. ② In principle, doctoral degree dissertations should be written in English. Article 21 (Qualification Examination) ① Qualification Examination is composed of general examination and foreign language examination. ② Korean language examination is conducted for international students in department of Korean studies as foreign language examination for master’s degree. In case of doctoral degree program, examination for English is necessary and the language for the ‘second foreign language examination’ can be chosen by the applicant. ③ The questions of foreign language exam are made up by 2 or more examiners appointed by the Dean and the passing grade is more than 70 out of 100. ④ There are written and oral exam for general exam of Master’s degree. Oral exams will be conducted for students with special program under the Dean’s decision. ⑤ Two subjects are tested for written exam in the general exam of master’s degree: students of department of international studies are tested on one of the core courses and one from the field of their specialization. For department of Korean studies, two subjects are conducted for written exam (students can choose the two from three fields). ⑥ The general exam for Doctorate degree is conducted with one of the subjects from the applicant’s major (International Commerce or International Cooperation) to test the basic knowledge for common area. For major area, 2 subjects from International Commerce, International Development or International Cooperation will be examined. Two or more examiners are allocated to each subject. <Amended > ⑦ The passing grade of the general exam is more than 80 out of 100, but success of each subject is admitted.

65 Article 22 (Requirement for Qualification Examination) ① Foreign language exam can be taken from the second semester. ② The General Examination for Master’s degree can be taken only by those who completed at least 3 semesters with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. ③ The General Examination for Doctorate degree can be taken only by those who completed at least 3 semesters with a GPA of 3.0 of higher. Article 23 (Procedures and Dates of Qualification Examination) ① Students who want to apply for the Qualification Exam should submit the application form to the Academic Affairs Department with the examination fee during the specified period. ② Foreign language exam is conducted every March and September and the general exam will be every April and October each year. If necessary, additional exam can be conducted. Article 24 (Exemption of Qualification Examination) ① In case of Master’s degree program, students who are applicable to one of the following can be exempted from foreign language exams or the general exam. 1. General Exam a. Whose GPA of 3 semesters is 3.75 or above. <Article established > b. Whose GPA of 4 semesters is 3.75 or above. <Article established > 2. Foreign language exam (Korean) a. Who have taken Korean language subjects during 3 or more semesters and acquired grades of A or above. b. Who have submitted language evaluation sheet of a person in charge of foreign language (Korean) and gained the approval of the Dean. ② In case of Doctorate degree program, those who are applicable to one of the following cases can be exempted from foreign language exams. a. Who are above 237 in TOEFL (CBT) (within 2 years from the test date) will be exempted from English proficiency exam. b. Who acquired a mark of B or above in the language course of KU IFLS. c. Who received a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a foreign country can be exempted from the language of that country. d. Who received a Master’s degree in a foreign country or in a domestic International Studies graduate school which all courses are conducted in English can be exempted from English proficiency exam. e. Who received at least an Intermediate level of foreign language proficiency examination (NOT English) can be exempted from the language exam of that country. Article 25 (Reapplication of Qualification examination) ① Students who have failed the foreign language exam can reapply for it without limitation. ② While there is no limitation of application in case of the general exam of master’s degree, doctoral degree candidates can apply for the general exam at most 3 times. Article 26 (Thesis/Dissertation Evaluation Committee) ① Members of the Thesis/Dissertation Examination Committee are appointed by the Dean among the full-time faculty of KU and authorities on that field. ② Thesis/Dissertation Evaluation committee consists of 3 or more members for candidates in Master’s program; and 5 or more for candidates in Doctorate program including the thesis advisor. ③ The thesis advisor becomes the chief of the committee, presides over the evaluation, and reports the evaluation result to the Dean.

66 Article 27 (Doctoral Research Proposal Evaluation) ① Research proposal for doctoral dissertation will be evaluated for qualitative improvement. <Article established > ② The final result is determined by approval from 2/3 of the committee. <Article established > Article 28 (Thesis/Dissertation Evaluation) ① Thesis/Dissertation evaluation process includes the evaluation of the validity and eligibility as well as oral defense. ② The final evaluation result is pass or fail and success is determined by approval of 2/3 of the committee for Master’s degrees; and 4/5 for Doctor’s degrees. ③ The failed thesis/dissertation can be submitted again within a year after modification/addition process under the direction of guidance professor. Article 29 (Deliberation of Degree Conferment) The result of thesis/dissertation evaluation has to be deliberated by the graduate school committee of GSIS. Article 30 (Scholarship) ① Scholarships for Excellence of Master’s program can be granted to those who acquired 9 or more credits from major courses except language course in the previous semester. ② Scholarship Committee of GSIS determines the criteria and the amount of scholarship as well as the number of recipients, considering several factors such as grades of previous semester and family circumstance. Article 31 (Open Lectures) ① Open lectures can be established if needed and those who have completed the lecture are granted a certificate as shown on [Annex 1]. ② Whenever the lecture is established, matters concerning subject, title, period, quota and location are determined by the Dean. Article 32 (Research Students) ① Those who want to take specific course or program in GSIS can enter as a research student with the approval of the Dean. ② Requirements for research students are equal to those of master’s degree candidates and those who pass the test conducted by GSIS are admitted to enter. Article 33 (Research Period and Assignment) ① Research period of the research student will be 1 year. ② The curriculum complies with the curriculum bulletins. Article 34 (Meeting of Graduate School Committee) ① The Committee will convene when majority of the members are present and agendas will be deliberated at approval of 2/3 of the present members. ② Additional matters related to the operation of Graduate School Committee apply with the Provisions in Organization and Operation of Committee of KU. Additional Rules 1. (Operation) These Regulations for GSIS will be in effect from March 1st, (Interim Measures) Clause 3 of article 7, clause 4 of article 17 and clause 2 of article 18 of these rules for operation are not applied to those who entered school before the year of These Regulations for GSIS will be in effect from March 1st, These Regulations for GSIS will be in effect from March 1st, 2008.

These Regulations for GSIS will be in effect from September 1st, (Article 1 and 16 amended; article 3, 5, 6, and 7 established; article 4, 8~15, 17~35 article number modified). 1. (date of Enforcement) These regulations for Korea University GSIS will be in effect from March 1st (Interim Measures) The amended regulations except ③ of Article 4 will be applied to students who enter KU GSIS from March 1st, 2016.
