1 “Grammar to Explain” 관계대명사 that은 다음과 같은 경우에 쓰인다.
1) 선행사를 꾸며주는 제한적[한정적] 용법에서만 who, whom, which를 대용할 수 있다. 소유격은 없음. ex) Send the boy to travel that you love best. [whom의 대용] 사랑하는 자식을 [고생할 수도 있는] 여행길에 보내시오. 2) 선행사가 형용사의 최상급, 서수, all, every, any, the only, the same, the very의 꾸밈을 받을 때에 that을 사용하는 것이 원칙이다. 선행사가 the only, the same, the very의 꾸밈을 받는 사람일 때는 구어체에서 관계대명사를 who를 쓰기도 한다. ex) You are the best friend that I have. 당신은 나의 가장 좋은 친구이다. He was the only person that helped me at that time. 그는 그 당시에 나를 도와준 유일한 사람이었다. He was the only person who helped me at that time. [구어체] 3) 선행사가 everything, something, anything일 때에도 관계대명사 that을 쓴다. ex) Tell me anything that you know about that matter. 그 문제에 대해 알고 있는 것을 말해다오. 4) 선행사가 <사람+동물> 또는 <사람+사물>일 때 관계대명사 that을 쓴다. ex) Look at the woman and her cat that are coming this way. 이쪽으로 오고 있는 여자와 그녀의 고양이를 보아라. 5) 의문대명사 who, which, what(이 세 단어는 모두 관계대명사로도 쓰인다)으로 시작되는 의문문에서 쓰는 관계대명사는 that이다. 이는 있을 수 있는 같은 단어의 반복을 피하는 데서 유래하였다. ex) Who is the boy that is crying over there?
