파란색의 Cu(NO3)2-6H2O와 노란색의 CdS의 고체 혼합물을 물에 넣고 있다. Cu(NO3)2-6H2O는 물에 쉽게 용해되어 거름종이를 통과하나 CdS는 거의 용해되지 않아 거름종이 위에 남는다. 용액을 건조시키면 거의 순수한 Cu(NO3)2-6H2O 결정을 얻는다.
