Cornelius was also a man of faith. He worshiped God. He did many acts of charity. He prayed daily. But Cornelius was also a Gentile, a non-Jew. One afternoon about three o’clock, Cornelius saw a vision. An angel of God told Cornelius to send to the city of Joppa for a man named Peter. Cornelius immediately sent for three men, told them what to do, and sent them to get Peter. The next day, as the men were traveling, Peter was praying on the housetop at about noon. Peter also saw a vision. He saw heaven opened and a large sheet coming down that contained all kinds of animals. A voice told him to kill and eat. Peter refused to eat because the animals were ones that Jews called common or unclean. The voice said, “What God has made clean, you must not call unclean.” Three times the vision happened. Three times Peter wondered what it could mean. Then the three men sent by Cornelius arrived and told him their mission. They said an angel had directed Cornelius to send for Peter and to hear a message he would deliver. The next morning, they traveled together to Cornelius’s home, where Peter was welcomed. Cornelius even tried to worship him. Peter explained that he was only a man. He explained that he finally understood: God does not show favoritism. The gospel message is for all people. Peter told Cornelius and his household about Jesus, and everyone who heard the message believed and was baptized. Christ Focus: God does not have favorites. He loves all people. The gospel is for everyone. Jesus died on the cross to save people every nation. Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you must also love one another. John 13:34 Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. Matthew 7:7, 8
