3 3 Center for Underground Physics (CUP)  KIMS (Korean Invisible Mass Search) group has searched dark matter since 2000.  CUP was approved as a research center of Institute for Basic Sci ence (IBS) in Korea in 2012.  Research Area : Dark Matter (KIMS+), Double Beta Decay (A MoRE), Low temperature Detector Development etc.  Will construct a new underground Lab. until the end of 2018.  KIMS (Korean Invisible Mass Search) group has searched dark matter since 2000.  CUP was approved as a research center of Institute for Basic Sci ence (IBS) in Korea in 2012.  Research Area : Dark Matter (KIMS+), Double Beta Decay (A MoRE), Low temperature Detector Development etc.  Will construct a new underground Lab. until the end of 2018.

6 6 Standard Model

7 7 Higgs particle is discovered in 2012 by LHC experiment. Now we have a theory of standard model (SM) for the all known elementary particles. But, the SM theory is not sufficient (is not a “theory of everything” ) because ; It doesn’t explain about the Dark Matter and Dark Energy It doesn’t explain why the neutrino mass is so small. It doesn’t explain why only matter exist, not antimatter. These are “known unknowns”, but there should be “unknown unknowns”.

9 9 Dark Matter Halo 암흑물질의 존재가 중력효과로만 관측이 됨. 그이외 어떤 현상도 현재까지 관측되지 않음. 마치 존재하지 않는 것처럼. 모든 현상은 표준모형에 있는 입자들의 상호작용으로 설명됨. 태양계, 지구에서 일어나고 있는 어떤 현상도 암흑물질과 관계있다는 것을 밝혀내지 못했음.

10 10 암흑물질 입자를 직접 측정할 수 있는가 ? 암흑물질입자 원자, 전자 암흑물질입자 검출기 센서 암흑물질의 입자의 속도 ~ 태양의 공전속도 ~ 0.001c 운동에너지 ~ 1 – 수백 keV 중성자 원자, 전자 중성자 검출기 센서 감마선 전자 감마선 검출기 센서 원자, 전자 베타붕괴, C-14, U, Th 자연방사능 검출기 센서 < 1 event/kg/year Backgrounds ~ 10 10 event/kg/year

11 11 KIMS 실험의 검출기 KIMS-LT NaI(Tl) 결정검출기 개발로 DAMA 그룹의 주장 검증. 200kg 저온검출기 개발로 미국의 SuperCDMS 실험과 경쟁.

12 12 향후 세계의 검출기 개발. LZ : 7 Ton Liquid Xenon 200kg Ge 검출기 (SuperCDMS). 7 톤의 액체제논 검출기 개발. (LZ)

17 17 CUP 의 계획 : AMoRE 실험 AMoRE( Advanced Mo based Rare process Experiment) is a double beta decay experiment for  search of 100 Mo using scintillating low temperature detectors. ( 40 Ca 100 MoO 4, doubly enriched crystals) ~10 mK 의 저온에서 작동하는 검출기 개발 : 에너지 분해능 ~ 10 keV

18 18 Energy resolution data CaMoO 4 (natural) with a phonon sensor only. FWHM = 9 keV, Goal = 5 keV

19 19 Status of AMoRE In Apr. of 2015, AMoRE-Pilot setup (1.5 kg of crystals) is installed at underground laboratory for the first time. Phase I runs ~ 10 kg, and Phase II will run 200 kg of crystals. 반감기 10 27 year 까지 측정 가능. AMoRE-Pilot setup at Y2L AMoRE-10 in 2017-2018. AMoRE-200 in 2020-2022.

20 20 Instruments for CUP (2013-2014) Rn-free air system (120L/h) 4 Crystal growing furnaces 3 Refrigerators & FAB instruments. 4 heavy shieldings HPGe array for ultra-low background measurement. 2.5 MeV Neutron Generator ICP-MASS Cluster computing.

21 21 Crystal Growing Facility The center will form a laboratory for chemical purification and crystal growing. Goal : develop the technology for ultra-low background crystals for experiments.
