Caravaggio Conversion of Saint Paul Cerasi Chapel, Santa Maria del Popolo Rome, Italy ca oil on canvas approximately 7 ft. 6 in. x 5 ft. 9 in. 신이 아닌 인간과 인간의 상태를 주제로 삼았다. 신앙은 성자가 된 남녀 인간들의 신비한 체험과 순교를 통해서만 제시. 1606년 살인사건과 연루되어 로마에서 도망침. 활동기간은 12년. 극적인 충격을 주는 드라마틱한 요소를 강조했다. 바리세인 사울이 다마스쿠스로 기독교인들을 박해하러 가다 “사울아, 사울아, 네가 어찌하여 나를 박해하느냐”는 하느님의 음성과 눈부신 빛에 순간 눈이 멀어 말에서 떨어진 후 기독교로 개종했다는 성서의 이야기를 그렸다. 성서의 일을 실제의 일상 생활 속에다 끌어들여 새로운 의미와 해석을 시도함. 영적 신비를 시각적으로 실감나게 표현하기 위해서 카라바조는 실체만을 조명하는 테네브리즘 tenebrism 기법을 창안.어둠과 빛의 대조.
