What is a Proof of Concept?
A proof of concept is a common idea in the business world, where entrepreneurs and startups demonstrate that a company or product is financially viable and fiscally sound. ……….. - look at market demand, - feasibility of the project, - projected cost, - and other factors. This analysis would come together to provide a proof of concept, proposing an idea and showing how it will play out in the real world. Sometimes making a proof of concept requires - making a minimalist prototype, - small representation of a new type of equipment A proof of concept is an excellent way for a business to evaluate itself internally, as well as look at proposed acquisitions and projects. Some businesses specialize in offering proof of concept advising and evaluations, assisting companies in the path to making the right decision. Ultimately, a proof of concept is designed to reduce the amount of uncertainty involved with a new project or acquisition.

Seed Funding and Advisory Services
Advisory, advocacy and facilitating services are available to all UCSD faculty and research staff to: Stimulate University/Industry exchange Develop new alliances Explore appropriate commercialization strategies for new technologies. The von Liebig Center has several technology and business advisors who have backgrounds in various technical disciplines, as well as having considerable experience in start-up and early stage technology ventures, and have significant connections to local companies and investment sources. The Center has a variety of resources to draw upon in order to get the best help for the inventor such as CONNECT, Technology Transfer and Intellectual Property Services (TechTIPS), and the Center the Center for the Commercialization of Advanced Technology. Ways the Advisors can help you... Analyze Commercial Potential Protect Intellectual Property Create Business Model Identify Potential Licensees Market to Companies Write Business Plan Market to Investors Seed Funding The von Liebig Center awards seed funds of up to $75,000 to support commercialization of UCSD discoveries with near-term market prospects. Funds may be awarded to UCSD faculty members and researchers, or to UCSD graduate students who partner with a faculty mentor. Von Liebig awards may be used for development, testing, or prototype construction; to undertake more specific market research; or to protect intellectual property. The von Liebig Center funds are awarded competitively through an external review process with independent consultants. Proposals are accepted throughout the year, and generally 10 to 12 projects are funded annually. The value from the von Liebig Center goes beyond simply funding the early-stage project. In addition, our staff of experienced entrepreneurs and advisors can assist UCSD faculty members and students in all stages of evaluating the commercial prospects of their inventions. These advisory and mentoring services are available to all UCSD faculty members and students, independent of the Center's seed funding program.

EVENT PROGRAM: Idea Stream
Events: IDEASTREAM: Our annual IdeaStream Symposium in the spring is our big annual invitation-only event where we showcase MIT technologies and provide a way for our grant recipients to network and share ideas with top-name VCs, entrepreneurs, and other researchers. We ask you to put aside the whole day and participate by making a poster, hosting a lunch table, and possibly giving a talk. We encourage you to invite two team members to participate. OPEN HOUSE: Our annual Open House in the late fall is an opportunity for the closest friends of the Deshpande Center to see posters and demos from our latest grant recipients. It is an informal setting over cocktails and hors d'oeuvres for people from the MIT and business communities to get to know each other and exchange ideas. CATALYST PARTY: Each semester we have a small party to celebrate our latest grant recipients in advance of announcing the grant round. It's an informal party for our grant recipient teams and Catalysts to get to know each other, and all new grant recipients are asked to give a brief (2-3 sentence) "elevator pitch" of their project. It is not unusual for MIT collaborations to evolve from this event. OTHER: We are always experimenting with new event formats with the goal to spark new market-driven ideas and bring together the research and business communities. Some examples are Ignition Forums, joint seminars with student groups, teambuilding events, and so on. These are purely optional; as we inform you about them, you should decide what would be useful to you.
