El Día de los Muertos resembles Halloween, but it's a bittersweet holiday; it’s a day to remember those who have died. Family members get together to tell funny stories about deceased relatives and remember how they lived. Despite its title, El Día de los Muertos is an elaborate celebration of life. During this period, the popular belief is that the deceased have divine permission to visit friends and relatives on earth and enjoy once again the pleasures of life. On the afternoon of Nov. 2, the festivities are taken to the cemetery. In Mexico, people dress up in skeletal costumes, visit and decorate the graves of loved ones, and build altars with food and flowers not only at residences, but also at workplaces. The celebration of the Day of the Dead begins on 28 October and ends with a national holiday on 2 November. The Day of the Dead is an integral part of Mexican culture and particular to Mexican national identity.
