One day, a patient went to his dentist’s office. During the patient’s treatment, the dentist asked him, “Would you please help me solve a problem?” The patient agreed. “Would you scream as loudly as possible?”asked the dentist. “Try to make it sound as if you felt terrible pain.”The patient was very confused. “But your treatments never cause me to experience any pain.” he said. “That’s true,” said the dentist, “but I have to go play tennis at 6 o’clock, and you can see my waiting room packed with patients. I want to make them consider my dental skills dreadful.” 1.

My young son has become obsessed with Stephen King’s novels
My young son has become obsessed with Stephen King’s novels. He’s read all of Mr. King’s horror stories and watched most of the movies. I don’t consider this a problem, but my husband does. He says exposure to such things will harm our son’s mind. I disagree. In spite of my husband’s concern, my son is still kind, considerate, and respectful. In fact, when we have a family dinner together with relatives, they always tell us what a wonderful child we have. My son fully understands that novels are just novels. Of course, I don’t let him read or watch just anything. And I believe it is people who hurt other people, not horror books and movies. 2.

A long time ago, a flood in northern Vietnam prevented farmers from working in their fields. In their free time, ① they came up with the idea of *water puppets. First, ② they carved and painted the puppets. Next, ③ they attached strings to them. The strings were then tied to bamboo poles, which allowed the farmers to control the puppets. ④ They stood in their flooded fields and held the bamboo poles. The strings attached to the poles made the puppets move, so ⑤ they appeared to be alive. Using these puppets, the farmers gave the other villagers puppet shows. Even today, water puppets are an important part of Vietnamese culture. 3. <<< 동사 + 목적어 + 목적어 >>> ① First, they carved and painted the puppets. ② which allowed the farmers to control the puppets. ③ The strings attached to the poles made the puppets move, ④ so they appeared to be alive. ⑤ the farmers gave the other villagers puppet shows. ⑤ they ⑤ the farmers gave the other villagers puppet shows.

In the late nineteenth century, P&G mainly sold candles
In the late nineteenth century, P&G mainly sold candles. But the company was in trouble due to the invention of the light bulb. Suddenly, candles seemed to become almost useless. The future of P&G seemed to be hopeless, but a surprising event saved the company. An employee forgot to turn a machine off while he went to lunch. This created a strange material. The employee tried to find a use for the accidently made material and turned it into a kind of soap. P&G named it Ivory soap and made it the focus of their business. It was a great success. The lesson here is that with a little creativity, a mistake can be a chance for success. 4. ① A Creative Use for Candles ② A Mistake That Saved a Company ③ A Genius Who Makes Soap ④ A Forgetful Employer’s Habit ⑤ The Sudden Appearance of Soap ② A Mistake That Saved a Company

I wished the guy in the seat behind the bus driver would stop looking at me. He gave me the strangest feeling. I was really glad when my stop came and I could get off the bus. It didn’t take me long to realize, however, that he was getting off, too. “Please, God, let him go the other way.”I thought. I turned toward home. The streets were darker and emptier than they normally were. His footsteps followed mine. When I walked faster, he did, too. When I crossed to the other side, he crossed, too. Finally, I began to run. My heart was beating fast and I was shaking all over. ① lively ② gloomy ③ frightening ④ joyful ⑤ exciting ③ frightening
