8 1. Defining “Placeness” Modeling Place for intelligent systems
Applying the concept of “placeness” from architecture Place characterized by visitor, time, activity, space and opinion class and their attributes

9 2. Inferencing Placeness from Social Media
Problem/challenges Existing location-based services and personal agents 1) semantically irrelevant or 2) poorly personalized in terms of location search/recommendation Places are regarded as physical entities with static properties However, what’s more important is the people’s perception or contextual meaning that a place holds Previous social media analysis for place modeling Mostly focuses on texts and metadata, although images contain relevant information as well
