6 술어와 지시표현 l 어떤 표현은 항상 문맥과는 관계없이 지시표현으로 쓰인다. –Mohammed Ali –Cairo l 고유명사가 술어로 사용될 수 있는가 ?, l 동사, 전치사가 지시표현으로 사용될 수 있는가 ?

7 지시표현과 술어의 구별 l 술어와 지시표현의 구별은 명확하다. l 언어표현은 주어진 상황에서 어떤 특정한 대상을 지시하거나 지시하지 않는다. l 둘 사이의 경계가 분명하다. –John attacked a man.(referring) –John is a man.(predicator)

8 술어의 역할 l 술어는 지시표현의 지시대상을 명확히 해 준다. –The man stole my wallet. 정관사는 지시대상을 식별하는 데 도움이 된다. –A man stole my wallet. 부정관사는 지시대상을 식별해 주지 않는다.

12 지시표현의 확대 l 언어는 실세계에 존재하는 사물을 언급하는 데 사용된다. l 언급할 수 있는 것과 실세계에 존재하는 것이 일치하는 것은 아니다. l 실세계에 존재하지 않는 것도 지시할 수 있다 : 동화 등에서 unicorn, 마녀, 왕자 등의 표현은 그 세계에서 지시 표현으로 쓰인다.

15 담화세계 l 담화세계란 화자가 말하면서 염두에 두는 특정 세계 ( 가상세계, 실제세계 ) –Real world The Earth revolves around the Sun. –Fictitious world The dragon set fire to the woods with his hot breath.
