관계부사의 역할 관계부사는 앞에 있는 명사(선행사)를 수식하는 형용사절을 이끈다. 관계부사는 관계부사절에서 부사 역할을 한다. I remember the place where we first met. ← I remember the place. + We first met there.

3 A. 관계부사 - 선행사에 따라 when(시간), where(장소), why(이유), how(방법) 등이 쓰인다.
- 관계부사는 「전치사+관계대명사」로 바꾸어 쓸 수 있다. 선행사 의미 관계부사 전치사 + 관계대명사 장소 where at/on/in which 시간 when 이유 why for which 방법 how in which * 주의! 선행사 the way와 관계부사 how는 같이 쓸 수 없고, 둘 중 하나만 쓴다.

예문 That is the street where the accident happened. I’ll never forget the day when we first met. I don’t know the reason why she left him. That’s how the brain works when you sleep. (That’s the way the brain works when you sleep.)

5 The town where he lives is very peaceful.
관계대명사 vs. 관계부사 관계대명사는 절 안에서 대명사 역할을 하는 반면, 관계부사는 절 안에서 부사 역할을 한다. The town where he lives is very peaceful. ← The town is very peaceful. + He lives there. c.f. I saw the man who stole Mary’s wallet. ← I saw the man. + He stole Mary’s wallet.

6 B. 계속적 용법의 관계대명사 which which는 선행사가 사람 이외의 것일 때 쓴다.
which는 주격과 목적격이 같고, 소유격은 whose나 of which를 쓴다. I like this book which has lots of stories. (주격) This is the bag which I want to buy. (목적격) She has a cute wallet whose color is red. (소유격) = She has a cute wallet of which the color is red.

7 B. 계속적 용법의 관계대명사 which 2) 계속적 용법의 which가 취하는 선행사 계속적 용법으로 쓰일 때 which는 명사, 대명사 뿐만 아니라, 명사구, 명사절, 앞 문장 전체를 선행사로 취할 수 있다. I bought her a doll, which is so cute. (선행사=명사 a dog) Susan tried to find the book she had read ten years ago, which she found impossible. (선행사=명사구 to find 이하) He was very hungry, which led him to steal the bread. (선행사=앞 문장 전체 he was very hungry)

8 B. 계속적 용법의 관계대명사 which 3) 계속적 용법의 which는 「접속사+대명사」로 계속적 용법의 관계대명사는 「접속사+대명사」의 의미를 가지며, 접속사는 문맥에 따라 and, but 등의 의미를 갖는다. Sarah confessed that she was guilty, which was not true. → Sarah confessed that she was guilty, but it was not true. My favorite movie is “Kung Fu Panda”, which I’ve seen it four times so far. → My favorite movie is “Kung Fu Panda”, and I’ve seen it four times so far.
